You probably know that Memorial Day is a time when we remember and honor those service members who died fighting for America during its wars. This year that includes honoring approximately 1.2 million men and women who have died since the Civil War. I saw an obituary earlier this month that allowed me to consider these fallen heroes through a particular Greatest Generation warrior.
His name is Clayton Schenkelberg and he was the oldest survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He passed away on April 14 at age 103. During the attack, he volunteered to move some torpedoes and after that picked up a rifle and began shooting at the attacking planes. There are several articles about this American hero, but here’s one I liked.
