I recently read an article about the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, Netherlands. The cemetery contains over 8,200 American war dead from WW II — along with the names of more than 1,700 missing servicemen inscribed on the Walls of the Missing. One of Margraten’s most remarkable traditions began in 1945 when local Dutch citizens adopted graves to honor fallen Americans. Families place flowers, maintain remembrance and often correspond with soldiers’ relatives. The tradition continues across generations and remains a powerful symbol of gratitude for liberation during World War II. There’s an interesting video about this cemetery at the American Battle Monuments Commission website. As we remember our fallen service members this Memorial Day, so do the Dutch, thanks to American valor in WW II.
