May 28, 2010 — Whether it’s Memorial Day, Flag Day, Veterans Day or no particularly special day at all, it’s good to know that the men and women of the USS Harry S. Truman and the rest of our armed forces are out there, 24×7, protecting us while we enjoy a “holiday weekend” with friends and family.
Not so for some 6,000 Sailors in the HST Carrier Strike Group, who embarked on May 21 on a six-month deployment in support of maritime security operations. The aircraft carrier crew departs, having received a second consecutive and fifth total Battle Efficiency Award. A coveted fleet-wide award, it’s described as among the few given to an entire group rather than to individuals.
In other words, we’re all in this together. As each of us commemorates Memorial Day in our own way, let’s all be sure to take at least a moment of our free time to remember and salute those who are defending it.
